5 Years On The Market, WA Town Still For Sale

Juli Doty had big plans for the little ghost town of Monse, just north of Brewster.

A Wenatchee Realtor, Doty listed the entire town for sale five years ago.

She knew the town's owners Donna and Fritz Van Doren and they asked her to sell it for them when they moved from Monse to East Wenatchee.

It was a sweet deal: $575,000 for 60 acres that included seven houses, an old schoolhouse, a general store and post office, all platted into 100 parcels for anyone who wanted to remake their own little town.

And Doty was the perfect person to sell it. She grew up in Brewster, but often visited Monse as a child, and remembered it as a bustling farm community.

"I was here a lot. We'd go swimming in the river, and we'd ride our bikes right here, and play," she said.

N.J. exodus cutting into home sales

"Where have all the dollars gone?" That's one question asked by a Rutgers University study that examines the extent and effect of higher-income migration out of New Jersey. It's important because those who move take with them jobs, money, skills and future New Jersey tax revenues.

What the emigrants leave behind are high taxes -- the 10th highest in the nation, according to the nonprofit Tax Foundation group -- and homes. Lots and lots of homes.

Another study, by the Otteau Appraisal Group working for developer CRC Communities, says home sales in Hunterdon fell 31% from 2003 to 2007, and that the number of unsold homes increased by 51% for the same period. As a result, the time needed to sell a home has increased from one month in 2004 to nine months in 2007 "and rose in January 2008 to 12 months," according to the report.

Official says W.Va. housing market strong

Joe Hatfield, the state housing fund's executive director, says West Virginia's housing market remains strong despite a national mortgage crisis."West Virginia has not had the level of foreclosures that we have seen in other states," Hatfield said Thursday. "We have seen some foreclosures in state's Eastern Panhandle region, but overall the state has not had any increase in the number of foreclosures during the national slowdown in the housing market."Hatfield credits the state's lending industry and a more diversified state economy."Most of the types of housing loans in West Virginia are different from the tricky mortgages we have seen in other states," he explained. "Yes, we've have some adjustable mortgages, but most of those have been underwritten."The West Virginia Housing Development Fund has approximately 25,000 home loans, most with moderate- to low-income buyers."We have not seen any increase in the number of foreclosures out of our portfolio," Hatfield said.

MONTROSE — It is true. Foreclosures have increased in Montrose County. The total number of sales in the area are down.
